What Are Sizes of Aluminum Bottle Caps
Oct 14, 2025 10:25:23
When you unscrew a beverage or wine bottle, you might not have noticed the size differences among aluminum bottle caps—but these seemingly inconspicuous caps are actually precisely designed based on the product's needs. From common bottled beverages to pharmaceuticals and daily necessities, aluminium bottle caps come in a wide range of sizes.
Beverage aluminum bottle caps
Beverages are the primary application for aluminum bottle caps. From carbonated beverages to bottled water, sizes are designed to ensure a tight seal and ease of drinking, with common sizes ranging from 28mm to 32mm outer diameter.
Carbonated beverage/juice bottles: Due to the pressure inside these bottles, aluminum caps require a stronger seal. The most common outer diameters are 28mm and 30mm, with heights ranging from 12-15mm. For example, cola and orange juice, which we often drink, often use aluminum caps with an outer diameter of 28mm and an inner diameter of approximately 26-27mm (matching the outer diameter of the bottle opening). The edges are designed with anti-slip grooves for easy unscrewing.
Bottled water/tea: Bottled water pursues portability, so aluminum caps are smaller, primarily with an outer diameter of 28mm and a height of 10-12mm. Some smaller bottles (such as 350ml portable bottles) use aluminum caps with an outer diameter of 26mm to accommodate narrower-mouthed bottles.
Aluminum liquor bottle caps
The size of aluminum liquor caps is closely related to the bottle diameter and sealing requirements. Specifications for liquor, beer, and red wine (some of which use aluminum caps) vary significantly:
Beer bottle (crown cap): This is the most recognizable aluminum cap for alcoholic beverages. Its dimensions are highly fixed, with an industry-standard outer diameter of 26mm and a height of approximately 8-10mm. It features a raised "crown pattern" on the top and requires a bottle opener to open. It fits standard beer bottle openings (with an inner diameter of approximately 24mm).
White wine bottle caps: White wine bottles have larger diameters than beer bottles, so aluminum caps are larger in size. Common choices are 30mm or 32mm end cap, and heights are 15-18mm. Some high-end white wine bottles feature a "double-layer aluminum cap" (a decorative outer layer and an inner sealing layer), with a total height of up to 20mm, ensuring a tight seal while enhancing the quality.
Wine/cider bottles: Most wines use corks, but budget wines often use aluminum caps. These caps typically have an outer diameter of 29mm or 30mm and a height of 12-14mm. A rubber seal is added to the inner wall to prevent evaporation.
Pharmaceutical & daily chemical aluminum bottle caps
Pharmaceutical (Oral Liquid/Small Medicinal Bottles): Oral liquid bottles (e.g., 10ml, 15ml) typically have aluminum caps with an outer diameter of 20mm or 22mm and a height of 8-10mm. Some feature a "tear-off" design for easy opening. Small ointment/dropper bottles have even smaller aluminum caps, with outer diameters of only 15mm or 18mm and heights of 6-8mm. They must have a food-grade gasket on the inner wall to meet medical and hygiene standards.
Daily chemical (sample/essence bottles): Skincare samples (e.g., 5ml serum, 10ml lotion) often use aluminum caps. These caps are similar in size to pharmaceutical vials, primarily with outer diameters of 15mm or 18mm and heights of 7-9mm. Some may feature a matte finish or gold plating, balancing practicality with aesthetics.
Key parameters to choose a right bottle cap
When selecting an aluminum cap, consider more than just the outer diameter. Three key parameters should also be considered:
Inner Diameter: It must match the outer diameter of the bottle opening (for example, if the bottle opening outer diameter is 28mm, the inner diameter of the aluminum cap should be 28.2-28.5mm to ensure a tight fit).
Height: Too high will make unscrewing difficult, while too low will result in insufficient sealing area. Designs are typically based on the height of the bottle opening (a bottle opening height of 10mm and an aluminum cap height of 12-14mm are ideal).
Tolerance: For standard beverage aluminum caps, the tolerance is ±0.3mm. For pharmaceutical caps, the tolerance must be within ±0.1mm to prevent leakage due to dimensional deviation.
